Day 1: Arrival & Introduction

*Whatever you pack and bring into Mount Athos, you will be hiking with it. Pack light and use a backpack.*

Arrival in Thessaloniki

  • Pilgrims will be welcomed at the Thessaloniki Makedonia Airport (SKG) by the Athos Pilgrimage Guides(s).

  • You will be dropped off at your hotel for a rest (length depending on your arrival time).

Walking Tour

  • The group will then visit the Church of Saint Dimitrios, the patron saint of Thessaloniki, for an introductory prayer and blessing. This one- to two-hour casual walking tour involves stretching the legs after a long flight and is followed by dinner.

Presentation & Dinner

  • Dinner will be served, providing an opportunity for pilgrims to meet and share their intentions for the pilgrimage.

  • You will receive a detailed presentation of the itinerary explaining each day's activities and expectations.

Day 2: Travel to Ouranoupoli

Travel to Ouranoupoli- Rest

  • Breakfast at the hotel. Leisurely morning.

  • Travel to Ouranoupoli by van or bus (approximately 2 hours).

  • Rest and relax by the sea.

  • Group Dinner

Day 3: Ferry to Mount Athos & Pilgrimage Begins!

*This portion of the trip (the pilgrimage) may vary depending on monasteries' availability, travel dates, weather, etc.

Boat to Dohiariu Monastery- Pilgrimage Officially begins!

  • Pilgrims will collect their visas at the Pilgrims' Bureau in Ouranoupoli.

  • You will board a ferry boat to Dohiariu Monastery, a picturesque journey offering breathtaking views of the peninsula and the Mediterranean Sea.

Xenofont, St. Pantelimon and Xiropotam Monasteries

  • From Dohiariu Monastery, the group will walk to Xenofont and St. Pantelimon Monasteries, absorbing the serene natural surroundings and engaging in reflective silence.

  • Walk to Xiropotam Monastery, known for its warm hospitality and peaceful atmosphere, where you will spend the night.

DAY 4: Exploring by Bus & Walking (Approx. 6 Mile walk in total)

*This is the most rigorous of the days. For an extra fee, trained donkeys can assist with carrying your gear/pack

Bus to Karyes Monastery

  • The day begins early at 5 am with a 2-hour liturgy (mandatory). This is followed by breakfast prepared and served by the monks.

  • Bus ride to Karyes, the administrative center of Mount Athos. Pilgrims can explore the Protaton Church, which houses the miraculous icon of Axion Estin.

  • There are shops for necessities, religious icons, and food and drink.

Walk to Vatopedi and Iviron Monasteries

  • The group will visit Vatopedi Monastery, renowned for its miraculous icons and beautiful frescoes.

  • Next, they will visit Iviron Monastery, known for the icon of the Panagia Portaitissa (Keeper of the Gate).

Overnight Stay

  • The day concludes with walk to Kutlumus or St. Elijah Monastery, both offering unique insights into monastic life.

  • Dinner with the monks and downtime until lights out.

DAY 5: Final Visits & Return

Visit to Simonos Petras Monastery

  • The day begins early at 5 am with a 2-hour liturgy (mandatory). This is followed by breakfast prepared and served by the monks.

  • Walk to visit to the breathtaking Simonos Petras Monastery, perched on a cliff with stunning views of the Aegean Sea.

Visit to Grigoriou Monastery

  • Walk to the next stop at Grigoriou Monastery, known for its impressive architecture and serene environment.

Return to Ouranoupoli/Thessaloniki

  • The pilgrimage concludes with the return journey to Ouranoupoli and then back to Thessaloniki.

  • You may choose to stay in Ouranopoli or Thessaloniki for a longer period to rest at your own cost. We will provide transportation to your accommodations.
