When Booking Your Own Flight

*Athos Journey does not book your flight. If you are coming in on a transatlantic flight, you will most likely have a layover before arriving in Thessaloniki, Greece. Here are a few tips to consider while booking your flights.

  • Book a redeye flight that arrives in Greece in the morning or early afternoon. Jet lag can persist for a few days. Arrive rested and give yourself time to acclimate to the new time zone (Appr. a 4pm to 8pm departure time from US cities).

  • Do your best to limit the layover time to 2 to 3 hours.

  • Depending on the airline you choose may determine the "hub" city you will fly to in Europe. Each city has limited connecting flights to Thessaloniki. Make sure to research multiple flight plans and travel options.

What to Bring and Wear

*Pack light and use a backpack, not a roller. We can store your extra luggage if you are on an extended European trip.

  1. Clothing

  • Modest and Comfortable Clothing: Long-sleeved shirts and trousers. Shorts and sleeveless shirts are not allowed. *T-shirts are permitted while hiking.

  • Layers: A light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings.

  • Rain Gear: A waterproof jacket or poncho in case of rain.

  • Comfortable Footwear: Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots suitable for rugged terrain.

  • Hat and Sunglasses: For sun protection.

  • Toiletries: Basic hygiene products (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, etc.).

  • Towel: A small, quick-dry towel.

  • Reusable Water Bottle: To stay hydrated. We will be hiking.

  • Veneration: Kiss icons lightly, avoiding touching them with your lips.

  • Seating: Men should sit on the right side of the church if seating is available.

  1. Meals And Hospitality

  • Communal Meals: Meals are often taken in silence, accompanied by readings from religious texts. Wait for the blessing before eating and finish promptly.

  • Gratitude: Show gratitude for the monks' hospitality, often expressed through small donations.

  1. Interaction With Monks

  • Conversations: Keep conversations respectful and considerate. Avoid controversial or sensitive topics

  • Requests for Blessings: Approach monks with humility if you wish to receive a blessing.

  • Absolutely no photographs or videos are allowed unless explicit permission is given by the monks.

  • Always ask for permission before taking any pictures within the monastery grounds.
